In early March, the Mthembu family from Johannesburg reached out to Crown Tombstones after losing their beloved matriarch, Mrs Thandi Mthembu, who had passed away peacefully at age 75. The family was deeply committed to commemorating her extraordinary life and legacy with care and dignity.
Initial contact
Our journey began when Mr Sipho Mthembu contacted Crown Tombstones through our website. Boni, our compassionate consultant, promptly arranged a face-to-face meeting at our Johannesburg office, warmly welcoming the family and attentively listening to their wishes.
Consultation and design phase
In a heartfelt consultation, the Mthembu family shared beautiful memories of Mrs Mthembu, expressing their wish for a unique tombstone that genuinely reflected her vibrant personality, heritage, and enduring legacy. They chose a custom double tombstone design, symbolising unity and honouring both Mrs and Mr Mthembu’s future resting place.
Our experienced design team collaborated closely with the family, patiently assisting them in selecting colours, shapes, and engravings to perfectly encapsulate Mrs Mthembu’s remarkable life. After exploring various possibilities, they chose Zimbabwe Black granite paired with elegant gold lettering—symbolising dignity, grace, and strength.
Approval and manufacturing
Following approval of the detailed design mock-up, the Mthembu family utilised our flexible payment plan, placing a 50% deposit. Manufacturing began swiftly, with our team keeping the family regularly updated to reassure them of the progress and the meticulous care we dedicate to each memorial.
Detailed craftsmanship: capturing memories in granite
One of the special requests from the Mthembu family was a detailed engraving of Mrs Mthembu’s face on the granite surface. Our artisans use advanced, precision diamond-tip engraving technology combined with skilled, handcrafted detailing.
Photo selection and enhancement
A clear, high-resolution photograph of Mrs Mthembu was carefully selected and digitally enhanced by our skilled graphic artists to ensure every significant feature was captured accurately.
Stencil creation
A precise stencil was created digitally, capturing subtle features and expressions.
Engraving process
Using high-precision, diamond-tipped engraving tools operated by our expert engravers, the image was meticulously etched into the polished Zimbabwe Black granite, gradually revealing a detailed and lifelike portrait.
Finishing touches
The engraved portrait was gently refined by hand to highlight details, creating depth, realism, and a sense of warmth that honoured Mrs Mthembu beautifully.
Quality check and preparation
Once completed, our dedicated quality control team rigorously inspected every aspect of the tombstone—ensuring every detail matched the agreed specifications. The Mthembu family, upon viewing the finished tombstone, were deeply moved by the exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Delivery and installation
Our skilled installation team scheduled a convenient date for delivery and installation at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. On installation day, every step was handled professionally, respectfully, and with meticulous care. Mr Mthembu particularly noted the gentle, thoughtful approach our team took in positioning and securing the tombstone.
Completion and family feedback
